On New Years Eve 2020, I was looking for something to make, a new hobby, a new craft, anything. In our basement I found a needle felting kit that I had purchased a few years ago thinking one of my sons would like to make it. I had no idea what needle felting was and honestly thought, this couldn’t possibly be the name of this craft. Well, I worked on that little llama and just cannot begin to express how therapeutic it was to poke a needle into wool. This is where it all began.
I am lucky to have a fantastic neighbor a few doors down who is quite the crafter, I asked if she knew anything about needle felting and not only did she know, she already had materials; lucky me! She came over with a box of beautiful pre-spun wools of all textures and colors-what fun I had trying to make things. Then I hopped on YouTube and found Felts By Phillipa, she not only showed you how to needlefelt, but also about starting a business, marketing and Etsy advice.
It’s now the beginning of 2023 and on this two year anniversary I can say, I have really found my happy place. I truly enjoy needle felting, making 3D sculptures, and I love learning how to make more realistic looking creatures. I am currently following tutorials from a few different amazing teachers, constantly improving my skills and loving every minute of it.
I have also experimented with wet felting as well as flat felted pictures, which is very enjoyable, I just need to make more time for them. This will be my goal for 2023 along with at least one realistic animal per month.
